Whether the council takes it over or not will not affect the appearance of the central business district, nor the possible re-establishment in the distant future of the long gone Bathurst Square.
It is an historic building and whoever owns the building cannot change the exterior so it cannot become, for example, another fast food outlet.
The only issue is who should pay for the extremely expensive interior renovations: the ratepayers, who will never recover the outlay or the ongoing costs, or a private organisation.
All the councillors have to consider is whether the ratepayers wish to pay increased rates unnecessarily. They should tell the State Government “thanks but no thanks”!
