The Nationals leader was in Bathurst yesterday as part of a brief tour around the Central West and paid a visit to Mount Panorama, where preparations for Sunday’s Bathurst 12 Hour are in full swing.
Mr Stoner met with race organisers and members of last year’s winners, Team Phoenix, and gave a thumbs up to the growth of the annual endurance event, which is backed by the State Government.
“The Bathurst 12 Hour is set to kick off this year bigger and better and the NSW Government is very proud to support this event, which is not only a fantastic regional event, boosting the economy in the Central West, but it’s also an internationally known event,” Mr Stoner said.
“This sort of event promotes NSW and regional NSW around the world. The fact we have more international teams coming to compete is proof that it is money well spent on behalf of taxpayers to promote our great state as a place to visit and to help grow jobs.”
The issue of a second track for Mount Panorama is also still on the radar, according to the Deputy Premier, and he would like to see it come to fruition.
“I’d love to see a second track here at Bathurst to see it cemented as one of the world’s racing capitals, ” he said. “It always comes down to return on the investment and the availability of funds.”
Mr Stoner also announced the recent figures of an average of 70 passengers per day for the Bathurst Bullet meant it has been a worthwhile addition to services.
“The Bathurst Bullet trainer service is an outstanding success,” he said.
“This is a great service for the local community and I’m pleased to see people are voting with their feet in strong support.”
