Around 1.40pm yesterday officers from the NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Patrol, stopped three vehicles allegedly travelling in excess of 140km/h in a 60km/h zone on Mountain Straight, Mount Panorama. 

The three cars, a Volkswagen Golf, a Volkswagen sedan and a Mitsubishi Lancer, were stopped by police and all three drivers were spoken to.

The drivers – a 22-year-old man from Elderslie (driver of the Volkswagen Golf), a 28-year-old man from Warriewood (Volkswagen sedan), and a 21-year-old man from Camden South (Mitsubishi Lancer) – were each fined $2,154 and had their licences suspended on the spot.

Police also seized the numberplates of the two Volkswagens as the drivers were the registered owners of the vehicles. As a result, the vehicles will be grounded for three months.

Operations Commander of the NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Patrol, Superintendent Stuart Smith, said police will not hesitate to cancel the driving privileges of anyone reckless enough to exceed the speed limit by more than 45km/h.

“Speed limits are in place for a reason – to save lives,” Supt Smith said.

“Exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h is incredibly dangerous. A crash at such high speeds is almost certain to result in people being killed.”

Under current laws, NSW Police have the power to confiscate the vehicles of NSW-licensed drivers caught speeding by more than 45km/h.

In cases where the driver is not the registered operator of the vehicle, Roads and Maritime Services may issue a notice to the registered operator warning that if the same vehicle is used in a second offence, the registration of the vehicle may be suspended for a period of three months.

The penalty for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h is six demerit points and a $2,154 fine.
