Sun, sand and shattered dreams: Dubai mirage turns to nightmare

Those were the days. The property market in Dubai was as hot as the emirate's golden sands. Both were so hot, indeed, the Australian developer Sunland Group had a really cool idea: refrigerate the beach. It would run chilling pipes under the sand at its $626 million Palazzo Versace hotel, and so spare its guests a scorching on days when Dubai's temperatures soared as high as 50 degrees.
