The incident happened in Littlebourne Street at Kelso around 12.10pm.
The driver of the vehicle pulled to the side of the road and the occupants got out.
Witnesses called triple-0 as workers from Dawson’s Removals attempted to put out the fire using extinguishers.
Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful.
Fire crews from Kelso and Bathurst attended and quickly extinguished the blaze.
Station officer Ross Bramich said the car fire was reported very quickly and congratulated the passersby who called triple-0.
He said firefighters would rather receive 10 calls to a fire than none because witnesses had assumed someone else had made the call.
