Whincup said it had been a tough session, especially behind the scenes.
"The track conditions were completely different to what they had been so far all weekend which we had to adapt too.
"In qualifying always you just try and find that extra bit and we had a couple of errors, I sped up at the Chase and smacked the wall which thankfully only bent the rim and the suspension.
"Being in the top 10, that is the most important thing, and we are there".
3pm (Touring Car Masters): Andrew Miedecke has won the first Touring Car Masters Race on Mount Panorama on Friday.
Two safety cars meant there wasn't one clear lap for the drivers during the race, with an accident marring the first lap and debris on the road bringing out a second safety car in the closing laps.
Second place went to John Bowe, Jim Richards was in third, followed by Glenn Seton and Brett Voulden.
The V8 Supercars now take to the track for their qualifying session, with each driver aiming for a top 10 placing ahead of Saturday's shootout.
2pm (V8 Supercars): Erebus Motorsport have confirmed they will repair the Heavy Haulage Australia Mercedes Benz of Tim Slade and Andrew Thompson for Sunday's Bathurst 1000, but they did seriously consider withdrawing the entry.
Slade had a heavy crash on Thursday afternoon that caused a lot of front end damage and it was only late last night that the team decided it was possible and worthwhile to repair the car.
A truck was dispatched with parts from the Gold Coast around midnight that was due to arrive at the track around 1.30pm with parts needed to complete the rebuild. The car is expected to be ready for warm up on Sunday morning.
12pm (V8 Supercars): A heavy crash for Chaz Mostert has put the Dick Johnson Racing #17 Falcon out of the running for this afternoon's qualifying session.
Mostert was heading up the mountain when he made heavy contact with the left hand wall approaching Sulman Park, the impact so severe the car leapt half a metre of the ground before crossing to hit the right wall as well.
Mostert was okay but the car was brought back to the pits on the tow truck and will require a lot of work to be ready for tomorrow morning's practice session.
The drivers saw two other red flags during the 50 minute session, one just 15 minutes in following debri on the circuit near The Cutting.
A third red flag was called when the Norton 360 car took the final corner too wide and ended up in the sand.
The cars returned to the track with just five minutes left of the session.
Finishing the fifth practice session in top position was Red Bull's Jamie Whincup with a 2.07.8226, followed by Team BOC's Jason Bright with 2.08.1973 and Pepsi Max's Will Davison with 2.08.3323 and Mark Winterbottom with 2.08.5653 ahead of Norton Hornet's Michael Carouso with 2.08.6441.
Qualifying begins at Mount Panorama from 3pm.
10.30am (V8 Supercars): A co-drivers only practice session started the second day on the track for the V8s.
Red Bull Racing Australia was the quickest team for the session, with 888's Warren Luff in first place with a fastest time of 2.08.4794, followed by Paul Dumbrell with time of 2.08.8669.
First time Bathurst driver, XBOX One Racing's Mattias Ekstrom took out the third fastest time for the session with a 2.09.1268. It was just his second time on the track, following a practice session on Thursday.
SP Tools Racing Steven Johnson finished the practice session in fourth place with a time of 2.09.2470 while Fukitsu Racing GRM's Jack Perkins finished fifth with a time of 2.09.4616.
The V8s will take to the track again for a second practice session at 11am, followed by qualifying at 3pm.
