While members are readying to join Rural Fire Service crews in a logistical capacity today, they were kept busy in Bathurst yesterday as strong winds swept through the city.
SES volunteers attended at least five calls for help throughout the day, two of which required the assistance of Essential Energy.
Around lunchtime, a tree branch fell on live wires near Bathurst Golf Course on the corner of Blayney Road and Boundary Road. Some 1600 properties across Bathurst lost power as a result.
Local Essential Energy teams attended to restore power supply to homes around Stewart, George and Browning streets, and Panorama Avenue.
“Crews carried out the necessary repairs to the network, restoring power by 2.45pm,” said Essential Energy regional manager Phillip Green.
Mr Green reminded members of the public to be cautious of electrical hazards in windy conditions and to remain at least eight metres away from fallen wires and anything in contact with them.
Later in the afternoon, SES and Essential Energy crews attended a call in Webb Street where a tree had fallen on a powerline.
Then, volunteers assisted the residents of a property in Browning Street after parts of the ridge capping on their roof was blown off.
An SES spokesman said they were also called to Furness Street around 3.30pm, after a tree branch fell on a roof.
“We had a steady day, with members attending several jobs,” the spokesperson said.
“As always, we would urge residents to tidy up their yards, secure loose items, and check their roofs and gutters as storm season continues.”
