Bathurst man Jim Lavis organised a local rally for the National Day of Climate Action, which will see thousands of people across Australia take to the streets on Sunday in protest against the Coalition Government's policies.
Mr Lavis invited concerned residents to join him on the steps of the Carillon at noon tomorrow, before enjoying a walk around Kings Parade and moving onto Machattie Park for a picnic.
Bathurst Regional Council recreation manager Peter Navin said council contacted Mr Lavis earlier this week, as they had not received any formal requests for the rally to be held in council’s parks.
He said they also notified him that the Carillon was an inappropriate meeting point as it was regarded as a place of reverence and reflection dedicated to those who served Australia and made the ultimate sacrifice.
Mr Navin said Mr Lavis was very accommodating with all of council’s conditions when he was notified that he needed permission for the event.
“Once he was advised of certain conditions, he was more than happy to comply,” Mr Navin said.
Mr Navin noted many people did not realise they had to seek permission from council to hold an organised event in a public space.
“The reason we have conditions is to make sure people are respectful and aware of other people using the venue,” he said.
Mr Lavis said he thought people had the right to freely assemble in the park and did not realise he needed to gain permission for the event.
He noted that he had realised the Carillon was a sensitive space for the community and said concerned residents would now gather adjacent to the memorial.
Mr Lavis said action on climate change was essential and he hoped to see plenty of people come out to support the worthy cause.
“It is time for ordinary citizens to give the lead and good example to our political and business leaders who are playing dirty politics over climate change,” he said.
“I cannot believe that humanity will fall of the environment cliff we are fast approaching.”
The National Day of Climate Action rally will start at noon next to the Carillon tomorrow.
