So Bathurst Regional Council is focusing its attention on the opportunities and challenges of this responsibility in preparing its latest Heritage Management Strategy.
Mayor Gary Rush said council has a strong track record of responsible heritage management, especially over the last 20 years.
However, he says it cannot afford to be complacent about this role into the future.
“This new Heritage Management Strategy will set goals for the next three years that will ensure we are in the best position to continue to protect, enhance and promote the wonderful heritage assets of our region,” he said.
“A measure of this commitment has been the growth of the council’s Heritage Fund from supporting nine projects worth $40,000 in 1999 to offering assistance to around 500 projects by 20012/13, contributing an estimated value to the region of over $4 million in that time.
“In a series of strategic planning workshops over recent weeks, councillors specifically identified heritage management as a key priority in their planning which is consistent with the expectations made by the community and supports our tourism and economic development objectives.”
The community will have the chance to contribute to developing the heritage strategy in a planning workshop tomorrow from 2pm to 4pm at the Bathurst Community Club.
“As Australia’s first inland European settlement, there is a very rich history here in Bathurst and the story of that history is written on the walls of the buildings and structures that are still here and the spaces and places where those buildings once were,” Cr Rush said.
“It is vital that as a community we are able to come together and build a shared vision for heritage management into the future, to ensure we continue to share in the economic and social benefits this vision can bring.”
