Registered nurse Rich Williams is the founder of Nurses fyi Magazine, a monthly magazine which can be downloaded from Apple’s app store and features general nursing articles from all over the world.
The 48-year-old started the magazine, which has just released its eighth edition, to put his 26 years of nursing experience to good use.
“I’d been wanting to have my own business and work from home for some time, and it sounded like something I could use my knowledge from 26 years of nursing for,” he said.
“At the moment the magazine averages about 10 downloads a day,” he said. “It is steadily growing, but I am a long way off, it is not profitable at the moment.”
While the magazine is currently a labour of love which he produces in his spare time, Mr Williams said he enjoyed the chance it gave him to connect with nurses around the world.
“It is great to be able to compare the different experiences of nurses from different countries,” he said.
Through LinkedIn Mr Williams has been able to connect with nursing groups from across the globe and invite them to send in submissions for the magazine.
He said articles were submitted from nursing students to retired nurses who wanted to share the important lessons they had learnt through their career.
Mr Williams noted it was nice to be able to showcase the hard work of nurses.
“Some of the people have really inspirational stories, a lot have had successful careers and are looking to give back to the profession,” he said.
“I wanted to make something that nurses can find interesting and read in their break.”
Mr Williams, who has worked in patient transport for the last 13 years, said the magazine was inclusive of all nurses and covered a wide variety of nursing topics and fields.
He noted that while Bathurst nurses had featured in the magazine, the publication did not focus on local issues and politics.
