POLICE investigating a devastating blaze at St Barnabas' Church have recovered a number of items which were stolen at the time of the fire.
Officers were called to the landmark church in Rocket Street, South Bathurst about 1.40am on Sunday and arrived to find it well alight.
It took three hours for NSW Fire and Rescue firefighters to bring the blaze under control but the interior of the church was badly damaged.
Police seized a Suzuki Vitara 4WD which was seen at the scene just prior to the fire and a forensic examination of the vehicle is continuing.
While officers say they have recovered some of the property believed to have been stolen from the church, they are still seeking public assistance to locate a number of gold-coloured ceremonial chalices.
A police spokesperson urged anyone with information on the fire or the thefts to come forward.
"Anyone who may have any information, irrespective of how minor you may think it may be, is urged to contact local police on 6332 8699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," the spokesperson said.
