A faultless regular season looked certain to culminate in a grand final victory to seal it all, only for Orange to produce a boilover on the big day in 2013.

With a new coaching team, though, and a handful of stars having moved on, it is going to be all about regeneration according to Brett Archer, who takes on the coaching role alongside his son and team captain Matt.

"A lot of people have different opinions about why Orange won and we didn't. They obviously played very well on the most important day of the season, we lost a handful of players to injury and probably didn't play our best," Brett Archer said.

"They had matched us in a lot of games prior to that only for us to run away with it in the last quarter or two, so you have to acknowledge that they're a good side.

"A lot of people have moved on now and we don't really know how we're going to fare. But I've got no doubt that we can maintain the standard we've set over the last couple of years, especially if training so far is anything to go by."

Brett Archer's background is more aligned with hockey than AFL but he has a proven record in imparting his considerable knowledge to his players in his former sport.

Combined with the knowledge and experience of Matt Archer, who has led the side on the field for the last two years, there is no reason why their partnership can't be a successful one.

But finding the right replacements for some of those who have moved on could be their biggest challenge.

"Sebastian Matheson, Nathan Belbin, Leigh Kingwill and Mitch Cameron are big losses, they're not just players we have to replace, they're all high class," Brett said.

"We haven't finalised our new faces yet but we've got a couple of handy recruits who've come over from other sports.

"The first month or so of the competition will be a bit about experimenting and finding our best combination, but don't worry, we'll be out there trying to win."
