Chifley Local Area Command crime manager Luke Rankin said yesterday the investigation into an alleged arson attack against the church on Sunday, February 23 was progressing well, and while police have not charged anyone in relation to the fire, he confirmed the 34-year-old had been arrested late Friday by police in relation to a break and enter immediately before the blaze erupted.
"A 34-year-old man was arrested on Friday in relation to a break and enter and outstanding arrest warrant," he said. "He was refused bail in a bail court on Saturday and reappeared before Bathurst Local Court yesterday where he was granted strict conditional bail."
Inspector Rankin said investigations into the blaze which severely damaged the historic Anglican Church in Rocket Street in South Bathurst were ongoing, but was unable to make any further comment.
"At this stage there has been no arrest in relation to the fire, but inquiries into the incident are still underway," he said.
Inspector Rankin said police will allege the 34-year-old broke into the church in the early hours of Sunday, February 23.
