"When I invited her on set I didn't realise she was going to show everyone photos of me when I was fat and in stupid costumes," he said.

"I've been trying to avoid reliving high school since I left and I've really avoided talking about it.

"I just want to move on. I'm on television now and in a few countries, you know?

"I don't need to reminisce about the boys kicking me in the head at school.

"But I'm happy to see Sue."

Sue is former Kenmore State High School drama teacher Sue Davis, who Thomas offered a small role as a therapist in his ABC-1 comedy show Please Like Me.

The comic makes a generous habit of offering parts in the show to his friends.

"I just thought she would be pretty good for the role," he said.

"...She was a good teacher, she's a nice lady.

"Today it was weird having to give her feedback in the performance.

"I had to go and say, 'can you do it more like this?'

"I thought she would be like, 'what the f***? Are you telling me how to do acting?"'

Ms Davis, now a lecturer in drama, arts and education at Central Queensland University, said Josh's talent as a comic stood out early on.

"He certainly always wanted to do stand-up comedy," she said.

"I knew he would be successful in that regard, but the fact he got his own TV show so quickly was really quite impressive.

"I think he has some really endearing qualities.

"He has always had that quality of commenting on life and that self-deprecating humour."

Ms Davis stayed in contact with both Josh and his high school buddy Tom Ward, who is also a regular on the show.

Yet she being offered the chance to audition for the show and to spend a day filming in Melbourne was a nice surprise.

"We have stayed in touch and it just so happened at the beginning of year I was in Melbourne and Josh said, 'there's a part in the show you should audition for'," she said.

"I actually did go and do an audition and luckily got the part."

Though none of them would know it at the time, Ms Davis was on set the very day Logie nominations came out and Please Like Me was announced as a finalist in the Best Light Entertainment category.

"Everyone is quite excited about that - it's well deserved, I think," she said.

Thomas, however, said he unmoved because the consolidation of award categories this year put his show up against The Voice, a program he said was vastly different to his own.

"I just don't think me and Seal are comparable or Delta Goodrem and I," he said.

"Light entertainment – which feels like not a compliment to be the best light entertainment – for some reason they grouped them together, so I have no interest."

However he said he would happily collect the award if he won.

"I like compliments and publicity is important but I think awards don't suit my creative ideals," he said.

"But if I win I'll be really happy."
