Saturday's effort saw Souths land their third win from five matches, rebounding well after back-to-back losses against Bathurst City and Lithgow Panthers.

There was no better example of their desire and tenacity than Ashleigh Corby.

The centre forward copped a ball to the face in the first half but she played on with a badly swollen cheek and ended up amongst Souths' scorers.

"Ashleigh Corby - what can I say? She's probably got a fractured cheek bone there, but she kept going the whole match. She was probably a bit unlucky not to score a couple more goals too," Souths coach Damien Carter said.

"Four and two, that's what I aiming at for Easter now. At the moment we are three and two, we have got where I wanted, so if we can win again next week that would be a bonus for us."

While Zig Zag created chances throughout the contest, Souths were able to limit their scoring opportunities to just a handful of shots.

In the end Carter's side finished with a clean sheet - something which made the coach just as pleased as the four competition points given his side had conceded nine goals in their previous two games.

"That is a good side that Zig Zag side, they are a physical side. They kept deep in that second half and that stuffed us up with our structure because we had to mark them and our halves didn't get involved as much in the second half then because of that, so it was a good move by them," Carter said.

"But we had the lead when they did that, so I wasn't too concerned. We were leading 2-0 so we didn't need to go up there and score another four goals, we just had to keep sticking it to them and we did that. To keep a good side like that scoreless - I am pretty happy with that.

"They had Keely Hunter in at centre half there which gives them a lot of options, but we shut her down well I thought. Nikki Braun, she has come along from a good game last week to even better this week, she has made centre half her own.

"She has got that confidence now, she is happy to jiggle it around and she takes the right option."

It was Zig Zag's Kim Northey who was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half and it was a sharp save from her that led to Corby's injury.

Tahlia Cranston blasted a shot towards goal and Northey got a glove to it to deny the talented Souths' inner.

Corby had been waiting for any chance to clean up a deflection, but that deflection struck her face rather than her stick.

Keen to see her side get back on the winners' list, Corby played on and it was her efforts from a short corner play that opened scoring with around 15 minutes of the match gone.

Two minutes out from the break Corby had another good chance as she and Emma Siekja exchanged passes, but Northey came up with a good block.

However, if Zig Zag thought they would go to the break trailing by just a single goal they were wrong. A turnover deep in their half with 35 seconds on the clock proved costly as Ali Stanford then powered home a shot from the top of the circle.

In the second half Zig Zag played their wingers higher to try and throw Souths' structure, but the tactic did not lead to a comeback.

Both sides earned three penalty corners for the half and created chances in open play, but neither could add to the scoresheet.

Souths came closest with a Michelle Somers shot that went across the face of goal while Zig Zag's Katie Wilkins and Hunter both had attempts blocked by Kate Brown.
