THE McAlpine family were among more than 130 participants in the annual Family Fun Challenge at Mount Panorama yesterday.
People of all ages were invited to take part in the 11-kilometre challenge, held as part of the annual Blayney to Bathurst Cyclo Sportif Challenge (B2B).
Paul McAlpine and his four-year-old son James were back for their second year; while his wife Shelley and the couple’s other son Ben, 22 months, were newcomers.
“It’s a good family event, it was a good ride,” Mr McAlpine said.
“James loves riding, it’s as simple as that, and I like to encourage that.”
Participants began their ride at Mount Panorama’s Pit Complex, pedaled to the nearby Charles Sturt University campus and returned to the Pit Complex.
Event organiser headspace was back again for another year, with manager Peter Rohr pleased registrations were up this year.
“We had 136 riders this year – that’s up 33 per cent compared to last year’s 102 registrations,” he said.
“We encourage individuals, families and friends to ride their bikes, it’s a nice, happy and healthy day.
“You don’t have to be a cyclist... You just had to have a bike and a helmet.”
Headspace has been a B2B funding recipient for a number of years. Thanks to previous funding boosts, the organisation has launched its hYLITE Centre.
The centre offers support with learning, education and employment goals to young people aged 12-25.
“It’s extra money that allows us to do more,” Mr Rohr said.
“We do something healthy for young people and the community.”
