When an English cricket writing mate first came to Australia, he could not believe how regulated this country was, and how meekly the natives accepted it. Contradicting his lifelong impression of a land of healthy anti-authoritarianism, everywhere he went - on the roads, in the pubs, at the stadiums - he found rules and people obeying them. Wherever there was a line, it seemed to him, Australians toed it.
