Mayor Gary Rush said it was a pleasure to hand out the cheques for the funding, which was worth a total of $14,380 and part of council’s Sporting Association Grants Program.
“We have a wealth of sports clubs and associations in Bathurst,” he said. “We have so many fabulous people who work together to make sport even better.”
Cr Rush said it was wonderful to be able to devote money to the advancement of sport and said the grant recipients would be putting the funding towards worthwhile projects.
He presented a cheque for the largest grant of $5000 to the Bathurst Pan Dragons, who are a not-for profit boating club.
Members Megan O’Farrell and Kerry O’Hara said they were delighted with the grant, which will be used to construct a shed at Ben Chifley Dam for the teams’ boat and associated equipment.
“We have been fundraising for a shed for quite a while, we are close to our target goal and this will help us get there,” Ms O’Hara said.
Ms O’Farrell said the shed, which costs around $40,000 to build, would protect the 15 metre-long boat from the elements.
“We spent so much money on it and want it to last,” she said.
“The shed will ensure the boat lasts longer and is easier to get out and use.”
Grants of $3000 were also made to the Bathurst Netball Association and the Eglinton Eels Junior Rugby League Club.
Netball supporters and players will soon be able to enjoy a sun-safe option when viewing the sport with the funds being use to erect much-needed shade structures.
While the Eglinton Eels will use the grant to improve the security of their storage facilities at their home ground.
The Eglinton District Tennis Club received $1180 which will be used to purchase nets for the mini tennis courts it is constructing and the Bathurst Panthers Rugby League Football Club received $2200 to be used to update equipment.
