THE Bathurst Bushrangers will be looking to continue their undefeated start to the Central West AFL first grade season when they host the Cowra Blues tomorrow.
After back-to-back away games to start their new campaign, the Bushrangers will finally get to play on their home soil at George Park.
Still, it has been as close to a perfect start to a season as the Bushrangers could have hoped for.
After getting the better of defending champions Orange Tigers – the team that denied them in last season’s grand final – Bathurst backed it up with a big win over the Dubbo Demons.
While the Blues have long had a fierce rivalry with the Bushrangers, the bathurst side will go into tomorrow’s match full of confidence.
Two times last season the Bushrangers beat the Blues by a margin of over 100 points while Cowra will head into tomorrow’s round four match on the back of a two-week break due to Easter and a bye.
The two games the Blues have played have provided little joy.
Cowra received a 154-point hiding from Orange to start their season and then lost to first grade newcomers Young by nine the following week.
But Bathurst co-coach Brett Archer was still adopting a cautious approach to the match.
“The first round going against these teams is all about finding out how they’re going to play for the year. We’ll try to do things a bit differently, maybe mix things up and keep ourselves flexible,” he said.
“We’ve got about 40 guys pushing for first grade and they’ve all got legitimate claims to be there.
“We may have to look at a rotation system. I’d hate to have one guy playing really well one week but then not play the next game.”
Archer believes that from the two games he’s seen so far, his team are looking dominant in almost all areas.
“There’s lots still to take from it. Our commitment to the ball is great. We feel like our fitness is really strong,” he said.
“When the game opens up we could work on some of our mid-range kicks. One of our initial concerns was going to be controlling the ruck, but Steve Grundy has filled that role well.”
There are only one or two slight injury concerns for the team, making the line-up largely unchanged from the Dubbo match last week.
“We may look at resting some guys because they’re the ones we may need in three months time,” Archer said.
The opening bounce will be at 2.30pm tomorrow.
