Bathurst is the only location in NSW to provide a Certificate III in Motorsport Technology which goes hand-in-hand with the motorsport history of the region.
Working straight out of the pits of Mount Panorama, the practical course allows students to enter the workforce with the skills and knowledge required in the motorsport sector.
The course leads to a variety of job opportunities including vehicle service, repair technician, machinist and fabricator.
Nigel Buttriss, the TAFE Western motorsport co-ordinator, who has been with the course since its inception, said TAFE has been running this course for five years “and nobody knows about it”.
Mr Buttriss is determined to make motorsport technology more popular.
“There is always a place for anyone who is interested in motorsport to join the industry,” he said.
One such person is Amy Rimmer who attends the class with 11 males and just one other female peer.
This does not deter Ms Rimmer from the male-dominated career, and she gets her hands dirty in each lesson.
“The workforce is already hard to get into. It becomes harder because you are a female and even harder because I am in a rural area,” she said.
She said her favourite part of the course is all the hands-on experience she gains working around Mount Panorama.
