PLUMMETING temperatures and a strong headwind did little to dampen the spirits of celebrity half marathoner Paul Welsh last Sunday.
Paul ran the half marathon while his wife Karen completed the 10-kilometre course.
The couple was trained by Dr Cheyne Donges six weeks out from the event, with Paul saying he thoroughly enjoyed it.
“It was great.” he said.
“I set a goal of running it under two hours and did it in one hour 54 minutes.”
Paul said he and Karen run together regularly.
“We just do it for fitness more then anything,” he said. “We run anywhere around the town.”
Paul said his decision to complete the half marathon was about achieving a milestone he had set for himself.
“I wanted to set a goal and do it,” he said.
“I really enjoyed it. I will definitely do it again.
“My next goal will be to run a full marathon.”
In the weeks leading up to last Sunday’s event, Paul said Dr Donges had him run the full 21.1km distance a number of times.
“I knew I could do the distance but the cold winds made it tough going,” he said.
“I wanted to break the two-hour mark so I was pretty pleased.”
Paul congratulated Bathurst’s running community on a top event.
“You see people doing the 10km event who are clearly not 10km runners but they’re there getting involved,” he said.
“That’s the great thing about it – no one was there to prove anything other than to participate.”
