WHILE Bathurst Bushrangers co-coach and midfield star Matt Archer admitted it has taken some time to get used to his new role, he is enjoying being co-coach readying his side to face Dubbo tomorrow.

The Central West AFL heavyweights will head to South Dubbo Oval looking to preserve their unbeaten run of four straight games, and similar form to what they’ve been showing should see them do so.
Archer is coaching alongside his dad Brett, and though they aren’t always on the same page, they generally aren’t too far apart in their ideas and methods.
“It is definitely a new experience for me to be doing it, but all the boys in the team have made it very easy to get into it,” he said.
“A lot easier than I thought it might be in terms of finding my feet. I’ve let the other players take a lot of ownership of things and that seems to have worked pretty well.
“As far as my dad goes, we have our little arguments and disagreements but we’ve managed to work well together and in general our views are pretty similar.”
The Demons began the year in sensational fashion, slaughtering Young by 167 points in round one, but have tapered off badly since then.
The Bushrangers got the better of them to the tune of 113 points, followed by a 130-point hiding to premiers Orange in their third game.
In their last game away to Cowra they improved slightly to lose by 82 and most importantly, they did actually manage to hit the scoreboard in kicking 11-13-79 themselves.
As Archer acknowledged, they are a different side at home and he is hoping for his team’s sake that the Demons don’t produce too many selection surprises.
“It’s probably fair to say they’ve improved a bit on what they were last year, they are taking small steps forward and like Young, they look to be just short of a couple of key position players,” he said.
“You never know with them at home though, they have a habit of sometimes getting some really good players to play the home games and they are capable of springing a surprise.
“We need to be ready for that.”
Last Saturday’s demolition of Young was built largely on the back of a 12-goal haul from Tim Hunter and another effort like that will virtually kill off Dubbo’s chances then and there.
Archer says that he would love to see that performance replicated, but he’s confident that the rest of the team can cover for him if it doesn’t happen.
“If Tim was a little bit more accurate in front of goal he’d be absolutely unstoppable,” he said.
“He is a great target for us up forward.
“But if he does get too much attention from the defence then we have other options, Harry Bowden is the obvious one who we can push forward if we need to, we have a couple of crumbing players as well who can work well off Tim.
“Dennis Pedemont has played the last couple of years at full-forward, too, so we’re not short of options.”
The Bushrangers meet Dubbo at 2.30pm tomorrow.
