While the Mitchell Conservatorium may be better known for classical music, an upcoming Rock School will change that.
Executive director Graham Sattler said rockers of all ages are welcome to attend the three-day course from July 2 to 4.
“It’ll be fantastic and we’ll have some special rock musicians here,” he said.
“It’s open to aspiring rock musicians of all ages as long you have an instrument. There will be lots of playing, and lots of instruction and recording.”
While the conservatorium has previously run a one-day rock session, this is the first time a three-day course has been held for rock musicians and singers.
“These guys can really go to town and make lots of noise and get into the performance.
“It’ll wind up with an open mic night at the Bathurst City Community Club on July 4.”
Mr Sattler joined the Mitchell Conservatorium in January this year, after time as Orange Regional Conservatorium’s director, and he said there is a lot of enthusiasm among staff and musicians for the inaugural Rock School.
“It’s an exciting initiative ... when I started here I was looking at ways of opening up other opportunities,” he said. “The perception is still classical, and that historically is where conservatoriums have come from, [but] when new styles come we catch them all like folk music, rock and blues.”
Rock School is open to any age participant who plays an “instrument you see in a rock band”.
Bookings are essential and there are strictly limited places available. The course runs from 10am to 4pm each day. Call 6331 6622 or visit www.mitchellconservatorium.edu.au to book.
