■ RAIL LECTURE: In the late 1800s, servicing the township, and more importantly, the silver, lead and zinc smelters of Broken Hill was becoming a logistical nightmare, with German coke and limestone along with water and other provisions being shipped vast distances overland by bullock cart trains. The lecture Connecting Broken Hill: A History of Rail in the West will be given by self-confessed rock and rail tragic Colin Ellis, and will be held at The Fossil and Mineral Museum on Howick Street at 2pm on Saturday. Refreshments will be provided. A small entry charge of $5 for museum friends and $7 for non-members applies. Children with an adult admitted free. Please RSVP by tomorrow on 6331 5511.
■ MISS TRAILL’S MAINTENANCE: Miss Traill’s House will be closed for five weeks from 3.30pm on Sunday to carry out general maintenance. This year workers will be stripping the wallpaper in Miss Traill’s bedroom, filling all wall cracks and replacing wallpaper with new identical paper sourced from a manufacturer in Queensland. Miss Traill’s House will reopen to the public at noon on Saturday, August 2.
■ CATHOLIC GATHERING: Archbishop Paul Gallagher will be the principal celebrant at the 10am Sunday service at the Cathedral of St Michael and St John as the church marks the anniversary of its dedication in 1865. Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Michael McKenna, Cathedral dean Father Pat O’Regan and priests of the Cathedral parish.
