The Western Advocate revealed plans last week to co-name Mount Panorama, prompting a furious reaction from motor racing fans.
Many took to social media to slam the plan, while others hailed the plan to use the Aboriginal name, Wahluu, as an appropriate way to honour the region’s original inhabitants.
Mount Panorama has always been known to the local Wiradjuri people as Wahluu, which means “sacred place”.
The Bathurst Aboriginal Land Council made the submission to the state government to co-name Mount Panorama with the support of Bathurst Regional Council.

The latest police new this morning:
■ A motor vehicle, parked and secured at Glanmire after it broke down has been set alight and completely destroyed. Around 2am last night the Police and Fire Brigade were called to Yarras Lane. The fire was extinguished, however, the vehicle suffered extensive damage.
■ Vandals have damaged garden fencing, a garden bed and a light cover in Machattie Park. The vandalism occurred sometime between 4.15pm last Friday and 8am on Sunday when it was discovered by council employees.
■ A prime mover, which was left unlocked, has been rummaged through and a GPS, mobile phone pocket knife and chargers stolen. The theft occurred sometime between July 18-20 in the Hampden Park area.

The train containing the bodies of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 victims moved out of the station at 7pm yesterday heading for the city of Kharvik, where Dutch military transports were ready to fly them to the Netherlands.
Rebel fighters who control the crash scene, near the village of Hrabove, have also to agreed to surrender the aircraft’s black-box voice and data recorders.
Meanwhile, Prime Minster Tony Abbott has lashed the ''absolutely shambolic'' situation at the crash site, as he dispatched former defence force chief Angus Houston as his personal envoy in Kiev and began the sombre task of speaking to the families of the 37 Australian dead.
