The business was forced to close between 11.15am and 2.15pm – one of its busiest times.
Vehicles were parked across the driveway to KFC with a sign stating: “Closed due to dirty water ... will open when all clean.”
A staff member at the restaurant said it was impossible to stay open because every aspect of the business relies on having clean water.
She said because it was the busiest time of the day, closing the restaurant inconvenienced a lot of people.
Bathurst Regional Council was called and the pipes were flushed, allowing the restaurant to re-open by mid-afternoon.
Council confirmed that it did receive a call from KFC about discoloured water and a water crew was quickly on the scene to flush the water mains.
A council spokesperson said if anyone experiences problems with discoloured water, they should contact council, and a crew will come out to flush the mains until the water runs clear again.
Discoloured water has been a problem in Bathurst for many years, however, council is about to start work to rectify the problem by removing troublesome manganese from the town water supply.
