Bathurst MP Paul Toole said these fish are some of millions that are stocked each year into waterways across the State as part of the NSW Government’s continuing commitment to improving recreational fishing opportunities in regional NSW.
“The extra rainbow trout, stocked by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), are a welcome addition to the dam,” Mr Toole said.
“Anglers from Sydney and the surrounding regions now have extra incentive to visit the Bathurst area and enjoy fishing pursuits in the many popular water courses we have in the area.
“This will also provide a positive tourism boost to the local economy and this is an area that has so much to offer for the recreational angler. Fishers will have a chance to catch a trophy trout, with the fish released weighing up to four kilograms, and measuring up to 60 centimetres.”
Mr Toole said Lake Oberon was growing in popularity as a recreational site.
“Lake Oberon is the ultimate fishing location, particularly now passive watercraft (or motorised watercraft) are permitted to be used and the fishing facilities have recently been improved,” he said.
“Fishing at the Lake will be boosted again in summer, with approximately 20,000 rainbow trout fingerlings expected to be released by DPI.”
The adult rainbow trout, produced at the DPI Dutton Trout Hatchery, were excess to breeding requirements at the facility.
Mr Toole said the fish stocking program is supported by money raised from the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee, and aims to enhance recreational fishing opportunities for the state’s fishers.
“These fish have been bred and released for recreational anglers, supported by funds raised from the sale of recreational fishing fee,” Mr Toole said.
