Local businesswoman Karla McDiarmid has come up with a brilliant idea to recycle the fittings and joinery from her day spa, which is about to be refurbished.

Today, after Macquarie Skin and Day Spa has been stripped of its cupboards, sinks, mirrors, benches and spa, Ms McDiarmid will have everything put outside for people to go through. All the things she doesn’t wish to keep will be up for grabs from noon. All she is asking for is a donation to headspace.
The business is located at Shop 2 /169 Howick Street.
Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation. They help young people between the ages of 12 and 25 who are going through a tough time.
Ms McDiarmid is only putting out joinery items that have been stripped from the building, not stock or artwork or other items she needs to run her business. Everything is in very good condition.
“I am really aware of just how much stuff gets thrown out. I think people throw away too much,” Ms McDiarmid said.
“I thought that instead of throwing these things away, there might be people out there who can use them.
“I spent a lot of money on all this and it seemed too much of a waste to just throw it out – some pieces are only two-and-a-half years old.”
Ms McDiarmid said this way she makes room for her new fittings, people get a bargain, unwanted items get a new life, and headspace gets some much-needed donations.
Already people are showing signs of becoming a bit competitive, so she hopes those who do come along enter into the spirit of the occasion and are kind to each other
Ms McDiarmid also wants people to remember this is for charity and to give generously.
“We never thought it would be so popular. There will be no favours and nothing will be available any earlier than 12 noon,” she said.
Ms McDiarmid said she is excited about the remodelling work ahead. She said they will be gutting the building and starting from scratch.
“We love our location, it is part of our success, so we don’t want to move,” she said. “But we have been here for 13 years and everything needs freshening up and reshaping.”
The business will be moving into a temporary location in William Street for the next eight weeks, and then they will be back in their Howick Street digs.
