8:45AM:
HE gave it everything he had, but in the end Carcoar wheelchair athlete Kurt Fearnley was unable to achieve a goal he so badly wanted on Friday morning and defend his Commonwealth Games men’s T54 1,500 metres gold medal.
After setting the pace for much of the final at Glasgow’s Hampden Park Stadium, Fearnley could not match the acceleration of great rival David Weir and finished with the silver medal.
8:30AM:
AN electrical business in Parkes was completely destroyed by a huge fire in the early hours of Friday morning.
The Auslec building on the corner of Dalton and Bogan streets caught alight shortly before 5am and it was not long before it was an inferno.
Parkes fire brigade was quickly on the scene but could do little to stop the complete destruction of the building.
At this early stage Police are not able to pin point the reason for the blaze.

Today is August 1 and that means we have to give a happy birthday to all the horses of the Southern Hemisphere!
Why is it that we choose this date for our equine friends to blow out their candles? The reason is to do with when mares come into season, where September becomes the optimal time to take advantage of their oestrus cycle. With foals being born 11 months later the date was the most convenient time to make a standard birthday for all horses - a majority being born in August.

IT has almost been 70 years since the Cowra Breakout and the city will be holding a range of commemorative events starting today. These include the official opening of the Cowra Breakout 70th Anniversary Art Exhibition, church services and a collection of Japanese cultural activities. Find out more here.
The breakout of August 5, 1944 saw over 1,100 Japanese prisoners of war attempt an escape from the Cowra camp with around half that number getting beyond the perimeter. It resulted in the death of 231 Japanese and four Australians with the rest of the prisoners returned to the camp.
In Bathurst events coming up...
THE Bathurst Arts Trail will be running this weekend, a celebration of local artists work showcased across many galleries in the city. All work is availble to see from 10am to 4pm. You can find out more on their website here, including all the different locations for exhibitions.
TOMORROW you can sample the Bathurst Macquarie Lions flea markets, with a variety of stalls to see at Berry Park. The markets will be open for five hours starting from 8am.

A GOLD mining project near Blayney has been put on the back-burner. Regis Resources has issued a release to the Australian Stock Exchange announcing they do not expect to progress the McPhillamys Gold Project at Kings Plains to a feasibility study level in the near term.
Bathurst residents were able to pick up their boxes of Krispy Kreme doughnuts from the Bathurst United Church yesterday as part of their children's youth and children's ministry fundraiser.
