Mr Carter who is assistant conductor with the Hamburg State Opera in Germany, gave the novices strategies and tips that will help them lead their choirs, ensembles and school bands.
Sydney Symphony Orchestra director of learning and engagement Kim Waldock said 20 teachers from Bathurst, Orange, Oberon, Katoomba, Cooerwull and further afield attended the conducting workshop.
Teachers are not trained in conducting yet many find themselves doing at some stage in their career, according to Ms Waldock.
“It is really empowering for teachers to learn the craft,” she said. “It is very much a part of our philosophy to engage with communities beyond our core business.
Sixteen members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra are in Bathurst for the next three days as part of the prestigious Playerlink Program.
This is the first time in 11 years that the program, which is hosted by the Central West Conservatorium and St Stanislaus College, has been offered in Bathurst.
During three days of extensive workshops 75 students from all over the state will explore ensemble playing, musical interpretation and technical skills.
The three-day program concludes with the opportunity for the public to observe a workshop tomorrow at St Stanislaus’ College at 2pm. Entry is free.
