Playing at the Orange Hockey Centre, Souths were able to convert two chances in the opening half to lead 2-nil at the break.
Despite an even second period, neither side could change the score and Souths claimed the four competition points.
Kinross-CYMS coach Pete Shea said it was a tight game, with the exception of those costly two moments for his side.
"It was just a couple of lapses of concentration and that was enough for them (Souths) to win," Shea explained.
"It really was only two moments in time where we didn't think clearly and they took their chances.
"Apart from that, it was pretty even. We certainly had opportunities in the second half and couldn't put it away."
Jessica Watterson opened the scoring for Souths in the 19th minute.
Four minutes before the break, Ali Stanford pounced on her chance to give Souths the 2-nil lead.
Shea said while disappointed to lose he was happy with the way his team performed.
"In the warm up we talked about things we wanted to do and we did those things a lot better today than we have done before," he explained.
"We're looking towards doing things for the future. Hopefully it was a lightbulb moment for a few of them.
"We'll move into next week with a bit more confidence."
Young gun Chloe Barrett turned in a solid performance for Kinross-CYMS, while Ellen Van Hoek was strong in defence.
Amelia Burke dominated the best and fairest points for Souths and Michelle Somers and Tahni Isedale also performed well.
