THE Bathurst Bulldogs Rugby Union Club have hosted representatives teams in the past, but come tomorrow they will witness the best credentialed squad to ever grace Ashwood Park.

That playing group is the Australian Wallabies and it gets better for the Bulldogs than just acting as host.

Senior and junior players will have a chance to learn from some of the nation’s best players during training sessions conducted as part of the Wallabies’ Bush2Bledisloe tour that takes in Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo and Penrith.

The visit has Bulldogs president John Maynard bubbling with anticipation.

“Everyone’s really excited having the Wallabies in town, especially at the club,” he said.

“When you get the chance to see the Wallabies, well, it’s the first time in memory I’ve seen them come out this way. It’s sensational.”

Specific details about what the Wallabies players and staff will run through aren’t known, but Maynard is thrilled to be playing host.

“It’s great for the coaches and supporters too. The really important thing for the regional areas is that it’s helping to raise the profile of the game here. We are struggling as a code, but this will be a great injection for it out west.

“No one really knows what it is they’ll do. We do know there will be the ARU development officers also coming to town to assist. It’s not everyday you get that opportunity to attend dinners with the Wallabies and have training sessions.”

Bulldogs first grade coach Shane Cantrill praised the efforts of the game’s governing body in giving the region’s juniors a chance to meet the nation’s best players.

“It’s a fantastic decision that the ARU have made to bring the Wallabies out to the bush,” he said.

Cantrill said giving all ages and grades coaching opportunities can benefit more than just the players.

“For the junior boys it will just be a wonderful experience to see all these guys, but I’m also really interested to see what they will do with our senior guys and how they want to run it,” Cantrill said.

“I think we’re all a bit interested in what they choose to do and it might give us all some training ideas.”

The Bathurst Bulldogs under 13s get their chance to train with the Wallabies between 5.30pm-6.30pm, while the seniors have an hour-long session which follows.
