He is getting ready to hit the road again for some outlandish celebrations in August for Australia’s most successful charity motoring adventure, the 2014 Variety Dick Smith B to B Bash.
John, along with his son Stephen and friend Graham Dempsey, will be driving from Brisbane to Busby’s Bore (better known as Moore Park in Sydney next to the SCG) in the NSW convoy.
It’s in honour of 30 years since Dick Smith instigated the event on the dusty roads from Bourke to Burketown, all in support of Variety – the Children’s Charity.
This year is the 26th time Mr Lindsell will campaign his trusty 1964 Wolseley 2480 MK2 in the event, and these days it’s the oldest vehicle taking part.
“It keeps amazing me how the old girl keeps on going,” John said.
“We bought the car as an old wreck and members of the Wolseley Club restored it. It’s the only car in the bash that’s made it through 26 events.”
Mr Lindsell said there’s been a lot of mechanical work done on the vehicle to keep it on the road.
“Because we venture into some inhospitable areas, the car swallows a lot of dust,” he said. “We’ve had the motor reconditioned about four times and would have covered at least 200,000 kilometres along the way.”
To mark the 30th year since the inauguration of this famed event, this year six different state and territory bashes will converge in Sydney for a special celebration at Moore Park with the event’s originator, Dick Smith.
As such, the 2014 Variety Dick Smith B to B Bash will be run in reverse to previous years, starting in Brisbane and arriving in Sydney in spectacular style, joining a parade of more than 700 outrageously themed vintage vehicles set to cross Sydney’s Harbour Bridge when all six Bash routes roll into town on Sunday, August 17.
“I’m looking forward to the new experience of starting from Brissy, and then capping off the trip by parading our iconic Chiko Roll across the Harbour Bridge. What a mighty spectacle it will be!” he said.
John’s Chiko Roll themed car really makes a statement and delights the kids along the way together with the other crews of wacky, colourful vehicles and their fancy-dressed drivers.
