On Saturday October 4 the old time capsules will be removed from the air-tight tank and opened by the businesses, families and clubs that buried them.
In an article in the Daily Liberal in 1989, then West Rotary Club director Hilary Hanson said the 35cm by 5cm capsules could be filled with “anything, so long as it’s not alive”.
Organiser of the event Joanne Murphy said at least 110 of the people who buried the capsules had been contacted but the Rotary Club of South Dubbo was still trying to get in touch with the remaining owners.
Ms Murphy said many of those she had contacted either had no knowledge a capsule had been buried for them to open or can’t remember what treasures they filled it with.
“It’s extremely rewarding talking to the people. Elderly people are really excited to find out what was put down 25 years ago,” Ms Murphy said.
She said one family was planning a family reunion for when the capsule was opened, while another family was eagerly awaiting to see what their late grandmother buried for them to open.
When the old capsules are unearthed, 300 new 35cm by 10cm capsules will be buried, to be opened 25 years from now in 2039.
Ms Murphy said the capsules could be filled with a wide variety of mementos from photographs to school records to a good bottle of wine.
The time capsules are $40 and available from a number of locations around Dubbo.
Money raised from the initiative will be donated to local charities.
Anyone who buried a capsule in 1989 and hasn’t yet heard from the Rotary Club of South Dubbo, or knows someone who did, is urged to contact Joanne Murphy on 6882 9426.
