Chifley local area command Superintendent Michael Robinson (pictured) addressed local media yesterday to confirm Joey Woodcock had died at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead about 9pm on Wednesday.
Homicide police have now joined local detectives to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Yesterday, police established a Strike Force Aldyth, comprising of homicide police from the State Crime Command and Chifley detectives, to investigate Joey’s death.
Officers are now waiting on post mortem results to determine the exact nature of Joey’s injuries and the cause of death.
The tragedy unfolded on Sunday afternoon when Joey was with his mother and stepfather on the soccer fields in Cunynghame Street, Oberon.
The child’s mother and stepfather told police they were walking along the soccer fields when the toddler was knocked down and struck his head after he became tangled in the leads of the family’s two dogs.
Superintendent Robinson said investigations into the tragedy were continuing.
“We will know more when the post mortem results come back,” he said.
Supt Robinson said police are still appealing for information. Anyone with information relating to the incident can contact Bathurst detectives on 63328699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
