Last Saturday's Ram Expo at Bathurst Showground was well presented and well attended, with a steady flow of visitors all day.
I can only guess what the generation of Merino breeders who came before me would have thought of the lineup of stud rams that were displayed.
Wool men of the calibre of the Pratleys, Dolbels, Tooles, Healeys and my ancestors would have wondered at the wool on the modern, plain-bodied, bold crimping, poll rams, as they certainly are not the type of sheep for which Bathurst and district was renowned.
In 2014 we are breeding animals for the sheep industry rather than for the wool industry and the number of lambs weaned is now of utmost importance.
The Merinos that can cut 7kg of 19 micron wool and rear 110 per cent lambs may still be the most profitable livestock enterprises for our Tablelands, and there were plenty of this type of ram in the shed at Bathurst.

There has been a report of another arson attack on a vehicle overnight.
A Suzuki Swift parked outside a home in Miriyan Drive, Kelso was set on fire about 11.50pm.
Firefighters extinguished the fire, but the inside of a door and a mirror were damaged.
A witness heard a loud noise and when they went to investigate they saw a vehicle driving away from the scene.
It is the sixth arson attack on a vehicle in the city in the last week.

Morning, Bathurst. We're expecting a partly cloudy day with areas of fog early in the morning. There is a chance of isolated showers from the late morning.
So if you're going to be out and about today it wouldn't hurt to have an umbrella in the car.
If you have a news tip, community announcement or photo you would like to share this morning email it to sandra.parker@fairfaxmedia.com.au
