The day, organised by the school’s librarian Maria Arrow, with the help of her library monitors, was an enormous success, with students embracing the event with gusto.
Mrs Arrow said it had been a while since the school had a book week parade.
“The last one was about five years ago, but the idea to bring it back came from the parents, with a body of support from staff, ” she said.
The students were eager participants in the day, with many spending he last few nights busily preparing the outfits.
“The kids have been fantastic and every single one of them looked great,” she said.
“Their broad range of reading interests, from fictional to non fictional characters, has been represented in their costumes.”
Mrs Arrow said one of the most important aspects of the day was a focus on reading.
“We have the older students budding up with the younger students so they, too, can connect to reading, which is the theme of their year’s book week,” she said. “It provided an opportunity for the older students to spend time with the younger ones and share stories or have a book chat.”
In the afternoon every student was then part of a book week parade held in front of a large group of enthusiastic parents.
As part of the day, students also made a gold coin donation with all money raised to be shared among others less fortunate, who have fewer reading opportunities then the students at Assumption.
At the end of the day all students went into a lucky prize draw, with two students from each class drawn out of a hat to receive either a book or a poster.
Enjoying the success of the day, Mrs Arrow hoped the book week tradition would continue.
