With all the form against Laughing Game and starting from widest on the second row, punters had given the eight-year-old no chance in the Opening Meeting BHRC 19 Oct Pace (1730 metres).
They were mistaken.
Laughing Game finished well late to cause one of the biggest boilovers the club has seen for some time, getting the better of Getaloadofher ($8.50) by a neck and another lowly-favoured runner in Itz The Promised One ($43.90) by 3.4m.
Not only had Laughing Game not claimed a victory in his last 18 starts, but it had been 16 since he had even cracked the top three.
After a false start, the field came around for a clean second start and it was Smack Dab Shannon who led out of gate four with Prince Raymac on his outside.
Star Singer sat in behind the leader, while Laughing Game sat towards the rear as part of a small bunch who were losing contact with the front-runners.
After a 29.2 first quarter, the field received the bell but dialled back the pace a touch to bring the field closer together.
Getaloadofher worked three wide around the field and Laughing Game successfully tracked her forward.
The pair passed the field with 200m to go and when it looked like Getaloadofher would wrap it up, Laughing Game found another gear to grab the unexpected result for the Oberon trainer.
The trifecta paid a measly $10,298.
