Over the next two weeks, hundreds of senior squash players will descend on our city for the championships being played at Bathurst Panthers.
They will compete in individual and teams events in age groups from 30-35 to 85 years and over.
But perhaps the star of the show is not one of the players at all but, rather, the magnificent glass court that has been erected in the Atrium Bar at Panthers.
The court brings a real international feel to the Bathurst event and will give many of the competitors their first chance to play in such a facility.
Of course, no one can spend two weeks watching squash so we encourage all players to take the chance to properly explore the region during their stay.
A lap of Mount Panorama will be a must for you all, but also take the chance to drop in at the National Motor Racing Museum to get a real appreciation of the history of the place.
You should also pay a visit to the Chifley Home and Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, and stroll through the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery.
You will need to eat, as well, and Bathurst has you covered there, too.
Cobblestone Lane and 9inety 2wo both received good reviews in this year’s Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide, while people come from all over to enjoy breakfast at The Hub. And while you’re there, drop into Legall Patisserie to pick up something for morning tea.
Bathurst also has a small but impressive wine industry producing some quality cool climate wines, not to mention its own microdistillery – Stone Pine Distillery – which boasts an award-winning gin along with a selection of rums, vodka and schnapps.
So there’s plenty to do here, and if you can fit in a game of squash or two then even better.
