In fact, expect to see many jobs that people have been putting off – whether for a lack of skills, lack of money or lack of time – finally get marked off the to-do list.
The concept seems very simple: people with offers and needs are linked through a website, and can then help each other.
But Timebanking – which is making its Central West debut at Bathurst thanks to the NSW Government – will rely on generosity to make it run.
Thankfully, there is no lack of generosity in Bathurst.
Our city is fortunate to have many generous people who give freely of their time for the betterment of the community.
They receive little or no recognition or payback for their work, but now they might be able to get a little help from other generous people if they want it.
There are many commentators who say our bigger cities, busier lives and increasing digital distractions are making Australians more isolated and less community-minded.
And there’s evidence for that in the decreasing levels of volunteering, and the number of community groups that struggle to find members to run them.
But surely the urge to help your fellow citizen remains – it’s just a matter of how best to harness it.
It will be fascinating to see how many people attend the Timebanking morning tea at the Bathurst City Community Club this Monday, and how many people sign up.
If the numbers are strong, listen for the sound of a lawn mower growling to life somewhere near you soon.
