BATHURST Bulldogs number 8 Hayden Tidswell is no stranger to admiration from his club, but he was showered in more of it on Friday as he picked up several major awards at the annual presentation night.
Tidswell picked up the best and fairest award for Bulldogs’ first grade side and also came away with the players’ player prize.
The representative player was happy to be called the best, but was more thrilled to be acknowledged by his team-mates.
“Players’ player is the one that you really want because it’s you being recognised by your peers,” he said.
“When I wasn’t injured I was happy with how I’d been playing this year. I’m really happy to be able to come away with both of these.”
Tidswell once again produced a strong season in the Bulldogs forwards pack as his offensive and defensive work rate was hard to match.
A recurring member of both the Central West Blue Bulls representative side and more recently the NSW Country Eagles development squad, Tidswell’s contributions have reached far beyond his home club.
Those high points were countered by several injuries Tidswell picked up through the year, firstly an ankle complaint early in the season before a knee injury sidelined him again.
That being considered, Tidswell was shocked that he’d pick up both awards.
“It was a shame to miss out on the last game against Orange after the knee injury I picked up against Forbes in the elimination semi, but these things happen,” he said.
“I guess I went in there to see how I’d go. I knew I’d missed games with injuries and been away on representative games along with Chris Plunkett, so to win it – I’m thrilled.”
As well as the major double, Tidswell also up the President’s Trophy, awarded to the player who achieves the highest representative honours during the season.
Oliver Crowe also received recognition for stepping up into first grade as he picked up the most improved honour.
Josh Lee received both the coaches’ award and was named most consistent player of the season.
Alistair Fryer, who spent several games this season filling in for Tidswell at number 8, was rewarded for his efforts by being named rookie of the year.
