A free community music forum will be held in Bathurst this Sunday – and legendary Australian conductor Richard Gill is set to lead the workshop.
Mitchell Conservatorium executive director Graham Sattler said people often shy away from learning to play an instrument saying they’re too young, too old, too shy, not experienced or not musical.
“I reckon music is the most accessible group activity in that size, age, religion, or health don’t matter, everyone can be involved,” he said.
Music participation has far-reaching benefits for the whole community according to Mr Sattler, and being involved heightens people’s self esteem and confidence.
“It’s very affirming to be part of a music group, even at an entry level, because the whole thing is about co-operation,” he said.
“For everyone it’s a very positive thing and a very affirming thing ... the sense of power and reward is an immediate thing, an immediate reward.
“It’s the most powerful medicine for social inclusion.”
The free forum will showcase a range of music performances, and offer the opportunity to get involved.
Mr Sattler said it is a “great coup” to have Mr Gill lead the forum and said the composer is passionate about community music.
“Richard is the most prominent advocate for music activity in Australia,” he said.
“Everyone will have the chance to sing on the day and it’s an opportunity to come and see a whole range of music activities.”
Mr Sattler said regional conservatoriums aim to give any member of the community the ability to access, play and enjoy music.
“It’s an opportunity for community members to connect with music,” he said.
“We offer the best quality we can to community members of any stage.”
Mr Sattler said Charles Sturt University’s $22,500 donation earlier this year will help the conservatorium continue to provide community and social equity music programs over the coming year in Bathurst.
The community music forum will be held at 2pm this Sunday, October 12 at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre.
