WILL you marry me? Can I pick you up? And, one of the oddest requests – can I take a photo of you from behind?
A day in the life of a grid girl is certainly an eye-opener according to Supercheap Auto grid girls Abbye, Natalie, Bree, Kiara and Tatum.
Over the last few days, each girl has walked the track and pits, talked to race fans and smiled for photos for around 50 hours each.
Sore feet from soaring high heels is just one occupational hazard according to the girls.
While Abbye, Natalie and Bree have been grid girls before, this was the first year for Kiara and Tatum.
The day of a grid girl might be filled with lots of smiles, and a whole lot of fun, but these girls say there are a lot of misconceptions.
“Quite a few of us know a lot about cars, people just think that we don’t,” Abbye said.
She said another misconception is what a grid girl does, or more importantly, does not eat.
“We eat really naughty foods,” Abbye said.
All the girls, except Tatum, are university students both locally and further afield, and they said the event was the chance to make some money to support their studies.
Bree, a second year journalism student at Charles Sturt University, said she’s enjoyed her time.
“They ask if we can hold signs for people [in the photo] to say hi to their friends back home,” she said.
“We get asked to give a lot of kisses,” Kiara said.
Natalie was back for her second year of being a grid girl, and said she’ll definitely be back.
“It’s so much fun, and we love it,” she said.
All say they love the chance to be a grid girl, and despite a few close calls with race fans, they’ll be back next year to do it all over again.
