The biennial event attracted more than 150 firefighters from across NSW and Victoria to compete for top honours and go on to the national championships.
The Kelso crew sat on 400 points, ahead of the Dorrigo crew on 378 points, and way in front of Bathurst brigade in fifth place with 182 points.
The dedicated Kelso crew won the State Championships in 2012, and have high hopes for another win at this year’s event.
FRNSW commissioner Greg Mullins AFSM said it’s the extraordinary teamwork of the Kelso brigade members that has set them apart in previous years.
“They’ve got great leadership and are very cohesive, their teamwork is second to none,” he said as the three-day competition got underway yesterday.
“The hot tip is Kelso, but I reckon Echuca and [Moonbi] Kootingal [Rural Fire Service] are breathing down their neck.”
Commissioner Mullins said the championship’s timed events include situations that firefighters come face-to-face with during their work, including the jaws of life, breathing apparatus, rescues, ladders, water boosters and high-rise firefighting.
The State Championships might have a history dating back to the 1800s, but this is the first time they have been held in Bathurst.
A firefighter for many years before he became commissioner, Greg Mullins reflected at yesterday’s opening ceremony on the vital skills all firefighters need every day at work.
“It’s all about teamwork and people working together ... it’s a bit of fun, and a bit of competition,” he said.
The championships continue today and tomorrow from 8am to 4pm at Learmonth Park.
A torch-light procession will be held tonight at 7.30pm, with all firefighters, historic fire engines from the Museum of Fire in Penrith, and The Scots School marching band involved.
Entry to all events is free.
