The Firefighters State Championship were held in Bathurst last week and our city made quite the impression on the visiting firies.
Director of championships Rob McNeal enjoyed bringing the event to Bathurst.
“Bathurst was absolutely fantastic,” he said.
“The teams were very well received.”
He found the warm and sunny weather conditions, combined with the track they used, were perfect for conducting an event of that kind.
There were plenty of compliments for the local businesses around town, too.
Mr McNeal said a lot of the teams ate out at local establishments and really enjoyed themselves, while places like Bathurst Panthers and Kings Parade provided the perfect setting for their larger non-competition events.
“We had our final ceremony at the Panthers club – there was nothing but good words said,” he said.
The other events separate from the competition itself showed the camaraderie between firefighters and allowed local residents to be involved in the championship activities.
“The highlight of the events away from the track was the torchlight procession,” Mr McNeal said.
This event saw 225 firefighters with kerosene lamps parade through the centre of town to Carrington Park on Friday night.
The procession was followed by a fireworks display, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
On Saturday the creativity soared with performances from the Fire and Rescue NSW Band and Precision Marching Team.
Back on the track at Learmonth Park, the championships concluded on Saturday afternoon following the final six events.
Dorrigo were hailed the winners after their repeated first placings in the events.
Their victory was praised by many who believe the title was a long time coming.
