The father of runaway schoolgirl Michelle Levy says he will fight a common assault charge laid against him.

Adam Levy says the charge had nothing to do with his 11-year-old daughter who ran away from her North Bondi home and spent two nights with a stranger.

Police say the 40-year-old was charged after he allegedly assaulted a male.

The business analyst was expected to face Waverley Local Court on November 20.

Michelle Levy left her family home with her parents in her school uniform on Tuesday morning.

When asked how she was feeling after being away from home for 48 hours, she replied, "good".

Her father told the media the Woollahra Public School student had run away on Saturday night after an argument over a chocolate bar.

Mr Levy did not express any surprise or anger about the unknown man who took Michelle "under his wing" and allowed her stay at his Randwick unit for two nights.

"She hooked up with someone on Saturday night - I mean, not in the hook-up sense," Mr Levy said on Monday.

"Someone came across her and took her under their wing since Saturday night. We don't know exactly what happened, all we know is that they went shopping."

An Anglicare spokeswoman said on Tuesday the man who had housed Michelle had contacted Anglicare on Monday because he was aware of the organisation's work in the community.

"He knew about our work and how we help people and so he rang the Anglicare office in Bondi, and then the Anglicare worker was responsible for facilitating the reunion [of Michelle with her parents]," she said.

The spokeswoman said the man had indicated that he wanted "to keep a low profile" and did not want to speak publicly about what had happened.

The man was interviewed by police on Monday and released without charge.  It is understood detectives do not believe anything "suspicious" occurred while Michelle was under his care.

Mr Levy told Fairfax Media on Monday he did not want to talk about any prior dealings the family may have had with authorities.

"Anything you may have heard had nothing to do with Michelle so we are not commenting," he said.

The Department of Family and Community services would not confirm whether the Levy family were known to them.

"The Department of Family and Community Services is not permitted to publicly comment about whether an individual child or their family is known to our agency," a spokeswoman said.

Michelle's parents said they found out where their daughter was after a woman from Anglicare rang them to say she had been found in a unit on Mulwarree Avenue, Randwick, on Monday morning.

The phone call came after a two-day search with police and more than 1000 volunteers from the Bondi and Jewish communities. She was spotted on security footage at Bondi Junction on Saturday and Randwick on Sunday.

Mr Levy said he and his wife hugged and cried when they saw their daughter for the first time but did not want to press her for details about where she had been or why she had run away.

The only thing they discussed during their brief reunion was that Michelle had been eating chocolate Pods which she had bought during a shopping trip to Randwick Plaza with the stranger who had been looking after her.

Mr Levy said he had taken Michelle and her brother to a cooking class early on Saturday, followed by a trip to Centennial Park.

She was dropped home on Saturday night after a birthday party and it was not long before an argument began.

"We didn't really get the chance to talk to her after she got back from the party, we just sort of got straight in the argument," Mr Levy said.

An hour before Michelle was found, her mother Anne talked of how she had ran out after her daughter following the fight but then left her alone "to let off some steam".

When she didn't return to the house Mrs Levy drove to her parents' house nearby where she thought Michelle may have gone.

It was not the first time the student had runaway from home.
