WANDER up the driveway of this property and you will discover a house steeped in love, laughter and a little bit of history.
Built in the late 1940s, when art deco design was the ‘must have’ for architecture, this property retains much of its original elegance and charm.
As you approach this sleek and stylish house you’ll notice the rounded corners and columns of this architectural style.
You’ll also see the tell-tale ‘eyebrows’ above the windows and grand front entrance.
The home is streamlined and elegant in design, and that’s all before you even glimpse the exquisite gardens that feature towering maples.
Enter this cool retreat and you’ll notice the house has been modernised, but continues to retains its art deco charm.
Owner Jane Stephens said most of the work she and husband Colin Kleinig have undertaken on the property has been on the rear of the house, which was converted into offices in the 1970s.
“We knocked out the internal walls and made a bedroom, ensuite and a robe,” she said.
At the centre of the home is a formal living room, dining room and spacious study area.
Wander from the modern kitchen out into the well-positioned sunroom, which welcomes the morning light.
After you’ve wandered through the house, step outside to Ms Stephens’ favourite part of the property – the “secret garden”.
The first thing you’ll notice is the elegant inground pool – the first to be built in Bathurst, according to Ms Stephens.
“It was put in by John Bartlett. It was a beautiful pool, but an old pool, and we refurbished it,” she said.
One thing you can’t miss is the Taj Mahal, standing proudly near the pool’s surrounds.
“The Taj Mahal was my idea to hide the pool pump. I’ve never been there, but I thought it was a whimsical thing to do. We’ve got our own reflection pool,” she said.
The maples are really the feature of the garden, according to passionate gardener Ms Stephens, who said the classic garden is very quiet and peaceful “considering it’s in the middle of town”.
The backyard has its own well that Ms Stephens said is like the “Magic Pudding” – “it never runs out”.
The 2049m² property has three garages, but space for five cars, or a couple of cars plus toys.
“Go in through the secret door [in one of the garages] and you can get into all this wonderful storage above the three garages,” Ms Stephens said.
This property is currently listed for sale with LJ Hooker Bathurst.
