The Living Legends will be recognised at a special community event in 2015 with a commemorative tree planting, signage and Western Advocate feature.

Bicentenary Celebrations Committee member, Councillor Graeme Hanger said while he doesn’t know who’s been nominated so far, he is very pleased with the interest.

“The key to the Living Legends is that it’s about acknowledging people living in Bathurst today,” he said.

“I’m sure everyone can think of someone they’ve come across in Bathurst who you would consider a legend.

“I’ve certainly been talking about it in my circles and suggesting to colleagues and community groups that they take the time to nominate someone who has contributed to our community.

“I’d really like to see people from every corner of our region nominated.

“We know that sport and service groups are active in these type of projects, but when we look at community as a whole we have people making contributions to agriculture, volunteering, health and conservation that are also deserving of nomination.

“What makes this exciting is that this list of legends will be created by the community.”

While making plans to host a vintage fair as part of its Bicentenary celebrations, Bathurst Public School Parents and Citizens’ committee has also put on its list nominating someone to the Legends program who has contributed to school life in a voluntary capacity.

“Bathurst Public is the city’s oldest school and, as you might imagine, there has been a huge team of volunteers contributing to school life over its 180-plus year history,” P and C president Tony McBurney said. 

Living Legends will add to the program of Bathurst 200 community activities that includes council-co-ordinated events Peoplescape – People In Time project and Tell Us Your Story. 

There are also more than 75 community events now included in the endorsed events schedule.
