Mudgee’s own Dan & Dan opened the show before Mahalia Barnes made her local ADOTG return this time with her band The Soul Mates.

The patchy weather made an appearance during Australian country stalwart Troy Cassar-Daley’s performance, but he hinted to the audience that there was nowhere else he’d rather be.

“When I got the call from Jim [Barnes] to do a show out here I couldn’t resist,” he said.

As the sun started to go down The Living End turned to volume up on their first ever ADOTG show with a blistering set brimming with energy.

Night had fallen when head liner Jimmy Barnes came out with his 1987 song ‘Last Frontier’, a slow burner which built up and hit hard.

This was followed by the Barnsey staple ‘Ain’t No Second Prize’ that clearly resonated with the crowd as they sung along to the well-known lyrics.

Jade MacRae made the first of the promised live collaborations before The Living End returned to the stage so Barnes “rock with these guys” and revisit their stomping rendition of ‘Lay Down Your Guns’ that they teamed up on for the 30:30 Hindsight album.

Another more unexpected collaboration was the one with YouTube competition winner Neil Marshall who got to live out his dream and performed ‘Time Will Tell’ on the big stage.

The Jimmy Barnes Greatest Hits Spinning Wheel was in action every five songs or so, to add something a bit different to the set with tracks such as ‘Waiting For The Heartache’.

ADOTG Promoter Michael Newton was pleased with how it went and said that having a range of musical genres in the line up was a good move and a hit with the audience.

“I thought that it was a great line up and it worked out really well, heaps of variety and there was something for everyone,” he said.

“It was a great day, the weather was mostly good – there was a bit of rain there but Troy being a country boy worked with it – and the punters really seemed to enjoy themselves.” 

Mudgee kicked off the A Day On The Green season as the tour now heads to the Hunter Valley and up into Queensland.
