BACK in November 1809 a British diplomat called Benjamin Bathurst mysteriously disappeared in Germany during the Napoleonic Wars.
He was the third son of Henry Bathurst, Bishop of Norwich.
When Bathurst disappeared it sparked much debate and speculation about his ultimate fate, especially in science fiction stories, based on a perception that his disappearance was a case of particularly sudden, perhaps supernatural, vanishing. Recent research suggests the circumstances of Bathurst's disappearance were wildly exaggerated, and that he was almost certainly murdered.

What about this for a start?
When people ask where I am from
And Bathurst is my reply
They immediately say Óh that's where the V8s race'
And then bogan insults fly.
But while motor sport will always be
A source of Bathurst pride
For me the reason to be proud
Has other factors on which to ride
Sofala Gold for the sweetest treat
A mighty T-Rex on display
The home of former PM Chifley
Many sporting fields on which to play
If I don't like the Bathurst weather
I need not wait long for something new
And well that's what Bathurst means to me
It's more than bogans, beer and errant roo.
